Y7 Bradgate Park Archaeological Field School – 13Jun18

03 May 2018

We are organising a visit for approximately sixty Y7 students to Bradgate Park to visit the current excavations being conducted by the University of Leicester.

SCHOOL visit programme

BRADGATE Park flyer

The visit will take place during the morning of Weds 13 June, departing at 09:00 and returning about 13:00. Due to the early start before lunchtime we would ask that students bring a packed lunch with them.

The Field School is the fourth year of a five-year excavation by students at the university and our students will:

  • Visit the recently discovered 15,000 year old site, one of only three of this age known in the country. There will be an opportunity to speak to archaeologists and students and look at finds made in the diggings made around Bradgate house and discuss the LIDAR scanning system that identifies sites in the landscape. (N.B. our students will NOT be doing any excavating.)
  • Students will visit the activities marquee and will experience hands-on sessions investigating the role of an archaeologist, careers and using evidence and understanding bias. They will investigate how animal bones tell us about the past, and how pottery, seeds and plants tell us about life in the past. They will also learn about how archaeologists record their findings.

The number of places available on this trip is limited so, initially, if you would like your son/daughter to take part please complete the REPLY SLIP and return to Mr Norman as soon as possible (or email your child's interest to Mr Norman. Should the trip be over-subscribed, we will write to parents with an explanation of the selection criteria, which will be applied consistently and fairly to all interested students.

The cost of the trip is £8.50 and once you have been advised your child has secured a place, payment will need to be made by Friday 18 May 2018 via ParentPay (if we do not receive enough voluntary contributions to cover the cost of this trip, the trip may not be able to go ahead). Arrangements may be available to support parents/families who are eligible for financial support. Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.

Students are to wear school uniform, a good coat and comfortable shoes for the walking involved through the park.
