ASHBY School - transport - Sept 2017

31 Mar 2017

Dear parent / carer

I am sure you are well aware that the local authority have removed the “frozen transport status” of Ashby School with effect from the start of the next academic year.

This means that the local authority will only provide free transport to the nearest secondary school providing the home address is more than three miles from the school. This arrangement does not affect any students that currently attend Ashby School, but may impact on a number of students that are due to start in Year 10 in September 2017.

If Ashby is your nearest school and you live more than 3 miles away, you will continue to receive free transport.

We have committed to provide transport, at a small cost, for those students affected by this decision and that still want to attend Ashby School. We have been negotiating with a number of companies and can now confirm that Roberts coaches will be operating a service to all areas affected by the change.

The cost per journey will be £1.40 in the first year and Roberts coaches will manage the contract and will be in contact with all affected parents in the near future.

There are variations to the Local Authority School Transport Policy for low income families i.e. for children entitled to free school meals or whose parents are in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits that would entitle a child to free school meals or receiving their maximum level of Working Tax Credit. In such cases Free transport will be provided for:

secondary age children (11 – 16) to any of their three nearest qualifying schools but only where the distance between home and school is more than 2 miles but less than 6 miles. Please note that schools below 2 miles are included for the purposes of assessing which are the 3 nearest schools.

This means that, in most cases, if you have applied for Ashby School and are in receipt of free school meals or in receipt of a qualifying benefit, you will continue to be able to receive free transport.

Parents are required to apply for free transport at secondary age under this policy on an annual basis. This should be done at least one month in advance of children starting school and in writing with appropriate documentation to the address below. Free transport may be withdrawn in subsequent years if a child ceases to qualify under low income extended rights.

The contact addresses are:

Email: transportassessments@leics.gov.uk

Post: Assessments Team, Transport Operations, Leicestershire County Council, County Hall, Glenfield, LEICESTER, LE3 8RJ.

I hope you will agree that the cost is extremely reasonable considering the distances travelled and we hope that those of you that choose Ashby School will feel that in the broader context this represents good value for money.

If you have any questions about the new transport provision, please contact Roberts coaches directly as they will be managing all aspects of the arrangement. Their contact details will be on the communication they send directly to you in the near future.

Yours sincerely

Eddie Green - Headteacher - Ashby School
